Layer Me Up by Patterns for Pirates
/Hello everyone! I am so excited to be reviewing the Patterns for Pirates Layer Me Up Shirt along with my friend and sewing pal Larissa. Larissa and I have been part of the the Pattern Revolution team for a while now and, since we live about 90 minutes away from each other, we got together for lunch and, of course, some fabric shopping a couple of months ago. Our daughters immediately hit it off and we had a great time chatting about our favorite shared hobby :) It is so nice to meet your internet sewing friends in person and Larissa and I decided that both of us reviewing the same shirt was the perfect excuse to get together for another lunch and some pattern talk!
So what about this shirt that brought us together? Well first off, it is a super easy and quick sew. LIke about 25 minutes and BAM! hot off the serger! There are several options in the pattern; long, ¾ long and short sleeves, a sleeveless tank option, a banded or regular hem and a shirt or tunic length. I did the tank version in the tunic length and Larissa did the ¾ sleeve and shirt length with banded hems. I was right on the line between a large and XL, so I sized up to the XL and Larissa made the medium. We both agreed that the top was incredibly fast and easy to make. I could easily make one in whatever color I needed faster than I could run to my nearest Target store and buy a tshirt. Plus, being that I am almost 6 feet tall, I loved the longer tunic length for me because it covers my not-so-flattering areas…
My neckline ended up being a tad too long so I have some ruffling there, but Larissa’s fabric was a bit thinner and had better recovery and hers was spot on. I am hoping that once I wash it again, it will fall into place. Sometimes you have to steam, wash and dry your knits into submission :) Overall though, I loved the look and the fit of the top (plus I got the thumbs up from the hubs, so that’s a bonus!) and will certainly make it again. I have lots of small cuts of great prints that I could squeeze a tank out of, and as the name suggests, this is a great layering piece. I normally wear a cardigan with everything and I loved how my awesome sewing heartbeat print worked out for layering under a cardigan.
Bottom line: I think we both agreed that this top is a winner for functionality, ease to make and style/fit and that we need to do more duel reviews in the future to justify regular lunch dates!
Until next time!
