We all have that favorite "look" we want for our little ones. There are so many boutique styles that are gorgeous and unique! Lucky for us we can sew! How fun is it to whip them out ourselves in our own favorite fabric combos! So let's make them here in the USA …handmade with love for sure! Here are some patterns to create the look you want!
My girls love to wear KNIT shorties everyday under dresses, tunics, tank tops whatever it doesn't really matter. These shorts are fitted, comfy and fun! Not to mention, the perfect go to, with any boutique style top. I also have requests for me to carry these in my shop daily by loyal customers, so I decided to do just that. I was on the prowl for the perfect pattern.
Greenstyle Creations offers a whole selection of knit patterns. The one I chose was the Cotton Candy Shorties for girls sizes 18m-12years. This pattern had two ruffle options, both sewn on in the round so the ruffles are fully exposed on the outside. The ruffles are also sewn on with elastic in the bobbin allowing the ruffle to stretch with the leg. And it really does make a big difference. No popping threads! The elastic waist is sewn in and then folded down creating the waistband; not the typical casing style. It helps to know your child's measurements to create the ideal fit. The length is just above the knee and they are fitted. Oh and did I mention because they are KNIT you can leave the edges exposed----no fraying! I did use rolled hems on the blue pair below.
I coordinated them with two patterns by
Little Lizard King. The
double ruffle knot top is a fun way to mix and match your favorite prints with easy on and off for the lil one. It has two layers of fabric creating a double ruffle and is knotted in the back through buttonholes. Another option instead of buttonholes is to try adding 2" loopers to the back of the bodice.
In the first outfit I chose to use the "
Out to Sea" line by
Sarah Jane Studios for
Michael Miller Fabrics. One of my all time favorite prints. How cute is this outfit! So very haute and hip!! Mermaids, ships and the sea as we walk the Marina in our new outfit!
And for lil sis she is also wearing a double knot ruffle top over her shorties but I chose to leave off the top ruffle so I could show off this print in its entirety. This is a new line for
Michael Miller Fabrics called "
Quiet Time". This is so darling with the princess and the pea illustrations. I added a ricrac trim and button detail. Go crazy with the trims and embellishments and make it truly your own!
When I made the girls the pink cotton candy shorties I followed the pattern exactly, but with the blue dots above I ruffled the top ruffle down the center instead of closer to the top creating a different look. Both are equally darling in my opinion!
The other pattern I used is my hands down favorite top pattern--
the Ruffle Tunic by
Little Lizard King. I love to make this top as it is the perfect stash buster. Small cuts are all that are needed. The flat front bodice is a fantastic place to show off the delicate prints of Sarah Jane's new
Wee Wander line. Create layers of adorable ruffles. Then add ties on the shoulders for easy on and off. What an adorable boutique style top that is a perfect length to wear with the shorties...
