My most favorite time of the year to sew is here! During summer, my girls are always in dresses! They are not fans of shorts, and would rather be twirling their way to the pool, zoo, picnic or to whatever fun activities we have planned for the day. I was so excited to get to sew up the Picnic Petticoats pattern by the Handmaiden’s Cottage. Brylee had her end of the year program for Mother’s Day Out, and I found fabric that had her Bible verse for the program on it!
Let’s talk about the dress! The pattern shows you how to utilize 6 different fabric prints (it’s recommended they all be 100% cotton, linen or linen blends)on this beautiful dress. Perfect scrap buster! The skirt is made up of panels, with the middle one resembling an apron with ruffles. The top has an elastic back and reverse knot straps.
I love that the directions have you make the skirt first. I find with typical ruffly dresses, I make the top and then as I’m wearing out, I still have to make all the ruffles. I got to sew these ruffles while on sewing fire since the pattern has you make the skirt first! Ha! I was very thrilled about that!
I chose to only use 4 fabrics on my dress, so my three skirt panels are all the same. The directions have you make the front center panel a different fabric and the front bottom ruffle a different fabric from the rest. I also decided to leave off the tuxedo ruffle on the bodice because I wanted the words from the Bible verses on the bodice fabric to be visible. I do love the tuxedo ruffle in the pattern though!
The dress took me 3 hours to make from start to finish. The fit is great, and I see Brylee being able to wear this for a long time!
