Hi it’s Marnie and I blog occasionally over at Horris and Deedle (strange name I know, and yes there is a story to it) and I’m so excited that February is Sew Yourself Some Love month. One of the things I love most about PDF patterns is that the sewing community has evolved with them, and there are more and more women who are taking the plunge and sewing for themselves. It can be a steep and intimidating learning curve that requires you to really come to understand your figure, but for me, it has been a very worthwhile journey.
It’s summer here and I’ve been sewing up myself a storm. In Sydney ,summer is hot and often humid and I live pretty much in simple easy to wear dresses. The Made For Mermaids Mya dress is perfect and comfortable and so so easy to sew. I’ve made mine out of some sort of lightweight polyester knit that feels a little like what you Americans would call ITY jersey. It drapes really well and is lightweight without being see through. This pattern is a breeze to sew up and it’s so nice to wear a knit dress that doesn’t require you to think about holding your tummy in! I lengthed mine by 2 inches, and loved how it turned out. And whilst this is a summer version, the pattern has loads of options, so be sure to pop on over to the Made for Mermaids page and have a proper look at all the other variations and be sure to share your creation in the Made for Mermaids Facebook group.

I wanted to show some love today for the Made For Mermaids Women’s pattern Mya. I wish I could say that I sew for myself all of the time, but like many of you I’m usually the last person on the list that gets sewn for. However, when I found this fabric at Joanns I knew just what I wanted to do with it and I was determined to make time to sew for myself. The fabric I used for my dress is a soft sophisticated animal print from the Nicole Miller apparel line and has four way stretch. I love the fit of the Mya pattern and wanted something simple since my fabric print was busy. I am in love with the combined result and I wear my Mya dress all of the time! I have always been more of a creative person and in my younger years spent most of my days choreographing dances for dance teams or dabbling in art.
As an adult I went on to have a full time job in the fitness industry and eventually got married and had children. I live and breath for my children but somewhere in the process of having four kids, becoming a stay at home mom and frantically trying to keep thing running smoothly each day I realized that I didn’t really know who I was anymore. I had a sewing machine and started spending time sewing. As my skills advanced I realized that I had this energy and passion returning back to my life and it felt good. I had my own hobby again and best of all I had a way to once again express my creativeness. I sew because it makes me feel good. I sew because it is a productive creative outlet that reminds me of who I am. And to top it all off I have made some wonderful friends in so many facebook sewing groups who have made this journey even better.
