Magazine Review by Kim

Hello Pattern Revolution readers!  I am Kim from Kimmie Sew Crazy.  Today I will be reviewing the most recent release of One Thimble Magazine, issue 8.

Of course when I saw the chance to review the whole magazine I jumped at it!!!! I request to do the full review every time I see the call, and then am a tiny bit disappointed when I am not picked.  Well, not this time, here I am : ).  Ok, blah, blah, blah…too much talking about me! : )  Let me get on with the review.  So, what exactly is in issue 8 that you should be excited about?

First off and my favorite part- 12 really great patterns are included in this issue.  I have made 4 of them and have every intention of making the rest.   I made the Felt Succulents Headband, the Jackalope Tee, the Cosmos Reversible Skirt and the Cosmos Purse.  All for Mila of course.  In Australia, (the home of One Thimble)  they are headed into summer.  Here in Minnesota, summer is just about over.  So I was happy to see I could use the patterns even though I am headed into the opposite season : ).

The Cosmos skirt may just be my favorite.  It has a sweet scalloped hem, and lightly gathered waist.  The skirt was very easy and a quick sew.  This pattern is great for all levels of sewists and even suitable for a first project.  I used a gorgeous Lecien fabric on both sides, because it is reversible : )  Whoops forgot to get a picture of the other side : ).

The Cosmos skirt includes a matching purse pattern, The Cosmos Purse.  This may have been Mila’s favorite.  I used Robert Kaufman Yarn Dyed Linen and another pretty Lecien fabric for the lining.

For the felt headband I used 100% wool felt, it is so pretty!!!! I just wish I owned a sheep so I could make Mila and endless supply.  Why does wool have to be so spendy?

I added a bit of fluff to Mila’s Jackalope Tee.  The fluff is not included in the pattern and I really wish I could remove it, but I think I would have a few holes in the fabric.  So it is there for good.  I just added lace as the accent.  The fit is perfect on mila!

The 12 patterns are pretty awesome, but there really is so much more included in issue 8.  The magazine also includes 3 how to projects, including snack bags.  There is a really great article on photographing for your boutique business and a very comprehensive article on teaching kids to sew (I may have learned a few things myself) : ).  My favorite article in the magazine is the spreadsheet geek!!! Lots of great info on bookkeeping for small business.  We run three small business’ in my house, and really, I really needed that article : ).

Funny thing/side note...Mila has had a strange fear of frogs being in her shoes for the past few weeks.  We just happened to find a toad during our little photoshoot.  Guess what she was carrying around in her Cosmos Purse?  Yep, that poor little toad : ).  She set him free at the end, and thankfully has cured her fear of frogs in her shoes : ).  Toddlers are goofy!

Go grab issue 8, you will love it!!! : )

  • Shoes- Livi & Luca

  • Wool Felt I grabbed at Hancock Fabrics : )

I little birdie told me about some great knits....

I little birdie told me about some great knits....

I love knit fabrics, LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE them.  So I like to keep my finger on who has cute knits available at a price I can afford.  The Euro knits from L'oiseau run about $14-15 per yard, which for quality cotton lycra knit is a pretty good deal in my book.  Of course you want your buck to go as far as it can, so I love mixing in a statement knit with other solids to stretch these awesome fabrics to their max.
