Violette Field Threads Rosemary and Matilda

Are you always looking for classic pieces that you can make for your girls? I know I am! I love the design of the Violette Field Threads Rosemary and Matilda! Today, Erica and Jessica share their take on this classic set.

Hi, I'm Erica from Lollipops & Paisley. I’m here today to talk about the stunning new Rosemary Pinafore from Violette Field Threads. Classic, timeless, heirloom: all those words come to mind when I see this set. Sigh. I’m a sucker for pintucks and pleats. Since the Cosette is one of my all time favorite VFT patterns, this one was  a must as well. VFT offers a bundle with the Matilda Peasant Dress as well. That’s what I sewed up to pair with my pinafore. Sized 12 months through 10 years, this is just right for back to school or even school pictures (ours are next week).

The pattern suggests any type of cotton, cotton blends, linen, chambray, batiste, voile, silk. I have been hoarding (okay, stashing or whatever we are calling our ever growing fabric collections now days) this lightweight twill for a few months and decided to make it work (thank you Tim Gunn). It was a little more difficult gathering all that fabric with a thicker fabric, but it did work. I just don’t suggest it for the adventurous beginner! This Rosemary is in the vintage (short) length because I knew I was pairing it with the dress. The pattern does include a longer option.

Violette Field Threads includes over 40 full color photos in this tutorial. The adventurous beginner who will to take his/her time could make this pinafore. But it’s not a terribly quick sew. Those pintucks and pleats that look oh so lovely do take time. The designers even show you how to do a french seam to enclose those skirt seams! This pattern will walk you through creating an heirloom quality garment.

The Matilda Dress is a different spin on the peasant dress. It features three sleeve options and an elastic waist. I chose the three quarter length sleeves because I’m ready for fall and this girl needs some more fall clothes. The sizing is perfect! The size 5 fits wonderfully on my little kindergartner. For the Matilda, I went with a broadcloth because it is still hot here in Kentucky and I didn’t need my girl falling over in the middle of our jaunt through the woods for pictures. I think the broadcloth worked nicely! So, if you love Violette Field Threads or you’ve never tried any of their patterns, you really should head over and see all the gorgeous photos they have listed for the Matilda and Rosemary.
