Review of Sew Groovy by Ola Jane Patterns

review by Kara Orr

Hi y'all!  It's Kara here from Sweeter Than it Seams and I get to review the Sew Groovy dress by Ola Jane Patterns today that I made for my teenage daughter.

Let me start by telling you how easy the Sew Groovy pattern is.  I would say this pattern is a beginner pattern but also has some techniques that more advanced sewists would find interesting and helpful.

Here is what you can expect to find in the pattern:

  • Sizes 6m-14
  • Printing instructions
  • Preparation instructions
  • detailed French seam instructions
  • Finished length measurement chart
  • Cutting instructions and diagrams
  • Cutting instructions for a fabric with a double sided border
  • Sewing instructions with lots of pictures
  • Computer drafted nested pattern pieces
The instructions give detailed directions to sew a French Seam.  If you don't know how to sew a French Seam, this is a great tutorial.  There are detailed directions with pictures to walk you through each step of the French Seam.  There is nothing nicer than a totally encased seam.

Be prepared for easy instructions and a quick sew.  It took me a little longer to make the dress because I cut the border of my fabric off and turned it to make a border along the bottom edge of the dress and sleeves.  It would also look great with coordinating fabrics as a border for both the bottom of the dress and sleeves.

I shortened the dress by 6 1/2 inches because I knew she wouldn't wear the dress at a long length.  The pattern brings the length to the knee.  I thought the dress would also look really cute with leggings and boots.

I am very pleased with the outcome of the dress and so is my daughter.  Probably the biggest complement is that she liked it and her friend said it was super cute.  I am always so glad when my girls like something I sew for them.
