Hi, it’s Marnie from Horris and Deedle sharing with you today this adorable little dress I sewed for my daughter. This is the Kate dress from Lily Bird Studio - a simple a-line dress with a couple of different yolk options for the bodice that can be used or left off to create different looks. This pattern has been around for a while now, I’ve always liked the look of it, and I have been meaning to make one forever!! I did something a little different with this one though, and sewed up a knit version for our upcoming summer.
This was incredibly simple to make in knits, mostly because the pattern is slim fitting and has simple lines. I personally prefer simple lines as it makes the patterns so much more versatile if you want to change them a little. To make in knits, I simply cut the pattern pieces as is, on the fold, and did not put any sort of closure in the back. I used the facings included with the pattern because I like the look of no band at the neckline, but if you wanted to omit the facings and add a neckband for knits, that would work too.
I used yolk 1 in the pattern for this - it was a little fiddly to do with a knit, but no more fiddly than sewing a pocket and sewing slowly and carefully gave it a nice clean finish. I used one of my most favourite knits for the front of this dress - it’s a Leena Renko Design printed on European Cotton Lycra and it is one of my favourite printed knits ever. It’s expensive, especially after I get it shipped all the way to Australia, but I have not found knits that come close to the European knits quality wise and I love them. To add a bit of interest to the dress and make it less pink, for the back of the dress I used the same navy polka dots that I used on the front - also a European cotton/lycra knit.
I absolutely love this little dress - it is as cute in knits as it is in wovens…..now all I need is the globe to spin just a tiny bit faster so that it is warm enough outside to wear!
